October’s Birthstone: Tourmaline

October’s Birthstone: Tourmaline

A gemstone that has it all

October is a lucky month because it gets not one but two birthstones - Opal and Tourmaline. While opal is the more traditional choice, it is not durable enough for most everyday jewellery. At The Diamond Expert, we love tourmaline. With every shade you could imagine, from the brightest pinks to deep forest greens, this stone is proof that fine jewellery can be bold, playful, and still timeless.

What exactly is tourmaline?

Tourmaline is known as the gemstone of mixed colours, and for good reason. No two stones are ever quite the same. The colour comes down to tiny trace elements inside the gem, which is why you’ll see such a huge variety. Tourmalines are mined in places like Brazil, Mozambique, Nigeria, Madagascar, and even the United States.

A rainbow of varieties

Tourmaline comes in more shades than any other gemstone. Here are some of the most loved types:

  • Pink and red tourmaline (rubellite): warm, romantic tones

  • Green tourmaline: from fresh lime to rich emerald shades

  • Blue tourmaline (indicolite): dreamy teal hues

  • Paraiba tourmaline: electric neon blues and greens, very rare and very special

  • Black tourmaline (schorl): dramatic and grounding

  • Watermelon tourmaline: pink in the middle with a green rim, like a perfect summer slice

What it symbolises

Tourmaline has been linked to balance, love, and creativity for centuries. Different colours are said to bring different qualities. Pink is for love and compassion. Green is for energy and prosperity. Black is for protection. Whatever shade you choose, it is thought to bring positivity into your life.

Is tourmaline durable?

Tourmaline scores between 7 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale which makes it a great option for everyday jewellery. It is not quite as hard as sapphire or diamond so a little extra care is always recommended. A bezel or halo setting is perfect for protecting it while still showing off the colour. Cleaning is simple: just warm soapy water and a soft brush.

How to choose your tourmaline

When we help clients choose a tourmaline we always look for these things:

  • A strong vivid colour without too much brown or grey

  • A cut that makes the most of the colour and sparkle

  • Minimal inclusions that are visible to the eye

  • Rarer types such as Paraiba or chrome green tourmaline which often hold the highest value

Styling ideas

This is where the fun begins. Pink or red tourmaline looks incredible surrounded by diamonds in a romantic halo ring or a pendant you will never want to take off. Green tourmaline works beautifully with yellow gold for an earthy but elegant look. Blue and teal tones feel modern and sleek, especially in white gold or platinum. And if you want something playful, a watermelon tourmaline slice is a conversation starter every time you wear it.

Why we love it

Tourmaline really does offer something for everyone. It has colour, personality and meaning. It is more durable than opal which makes it a brilliant everyday birthstone. And because no two stones are ever alike, your piece will always feel personal and unique.
