Stud Earrings Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

For many people, their first piece of jewellery is a pair of stud earrings. Whether it was a trip to the jeweller or a slightly nerve-wracking visit to get your ears pierced as a child, there's something wonderfully nostalgic about that moment. You'd sit in the chair, hear the reassuring "three, two, one," and moments later you'd be admiring your brand-new stud earrings in the mirror. They may have been tiny gold balls, sparkling cubic zirconia or even your first real diamonds, but they marked the beginning of a lifelong jewellery journey.

It's one of the reasons I love stud earrings so much. They often hold our earliest jewellery memories, I gifted them to my own daughter for her eighth birthday. They're something we continue to wear and treasure throughout our lives. Whether it is classic diamond studs worn every day, to elegant pearl and gemstone designs for special occasions, they have a timeless appeal that never goes out of fashion.

In this guide, I'll explain what stud earrings are, explore the different styles available, and share my advice on choosing the perfect pair for your jewellery collection or as a meaningful gift.

What Are Stud Earrings?

Stud earrings are designed to sit neatly on the earlobe without hanging below it. The decorative element is attached to a straight post that passes through the ear and is secured with a fastening, usually a butterfly back or a screw back.

Unlike drop earrings or hoops, studs offer a clean, understated look that suits virtually everyone. Their simplicity is exactly what makes them so versatile, and in my opinion, that's why they've remained one of the world's most popular jewellery styles for centuries.

Why Are Stud Earrings So Popular?

I often recommend stud earrings because they're one of the easiest pieces of jewellery to wear. They're incredibly versatile and suit almost every style, occasion and age.

Some of the reasons they're so popular include:

  • Comfortable enough for everyday wear
  • Suitable for every age
  • Timeless rather than trend-driven
  • Easy to pair with other jewellery
  • Available at every budget
  • Perfect for both casual and formal occasions
  • Ideal for stacking with multiple piercings

Whether you're wearing jeans and a T-shirt or dressing up for a black-tie event, a beautiful pair of stud earrings will always look effortlessly elegant.

Types of Stud Earrings

Diamond Stud Earrings

If there's one style I believe every jewellery collection should include, it's a pair of diamond stud earrings. They're a true classic, offering exceptional sparkle while remaining understated enough to wear every single day. Whether you're buying your first pair or upgrading to something more substantial, diamond studs are an investment you'll reach for time and time again.

The setting you choose can make a real difference to both the look and practicality of your earrings.

  • Four-claw – My most recommended setting, allowing plenty of light into the diamond while holding it securely
  • Six-claw – Offers additional security, making it a great choice for larger diamonds
  • Martini Setting – Sits lower against the ear for a sleek, elegant and comfortable fit
  • Bezel Setting – A metal rim surrounds the diamond, providing maximum protection and a clean, contemporary look. It's an excellent choice for active lifestyles
  • Halo Setting – Smaller diamonds surround the centre stone, creating the illusion of a larger, more dazzling diamond

One of the things I love most about diamond stud earrings is that they're available in both natural and lab grown diamonds. This gives you the flexibility to choose a pair that suits your personal preferences and budget, without compromising on beauty or brilliance.

Men Wear Studs Too!

One thing I've noticed in recent years is just how many men are choosing to wear diamond stud earrings. Whether it's a single understated diamond or a matching pair, stud earrings have become a timeless accessory that adds effortless style without being overstated.

I regularly help male clients choose their first pair and the most popular styles tend to be classic round brilliant diamonds set in white gold or platinum for a clean, contemporary look. The key is choosing a size that's proportionate and suits your personal style - subtle  enough for everyday wear, yet eye-catching enough to make an impression.

Gemstone Stud Earrings

Coloured gemstone stud earrings are a wonderful way to add personality and colour to your jewellery collection. Whether you're drawn to your birthstone or simply love a particular hue, there's a gemstone to suit every style.

Some of my favourite choices include:

  • Sapphire – A timeless blue classic
  • Ruby – Rich, vibrant and full of passion
  • Emerald – Elegant with its unmistakable green colour
  • Aquamarine – Soft blue and beautifully understated
  • Amethyst – A striking purple gemstone with royal appeal
  • Tanzanite – Rare and admired for its unique violet-blue tones
  • Morganite – A delicate blush pink that's wonderfully romantic
  • Opal – Loved for its captivating play of colour

Gemstone stud earrings also make incredibly thoughtful birthday gifts, as many people love wearing their birthstone. Personally, one of my favourite designs is a coloured gemstone surrounded by a delicate halo of white diamonds. The halo beautifully frames the centre stone, enhancing its colour while adding extra sparkle.

Gold Stud Earrings

Simple gold stud earrings remain one of the most wearable and versatile jewellery styles, whether you prefer a timeless classic or something completely bespoke.

Popular options include:

  • Classic Gold Studs – Timeless and understated, perfect for everyday wear
  • Heart & Star Studs – Playful designs that make thoughtful gifts or first earrings
  • Geometric Studs – Contemporary shapes for a modern, minimalist look
  • Bespoke Stud Earrings – One of the most rewarding parts of my work is creating custom earrings for clients. From asymmetrical designs to unique combinations of gold and diamonds, bespoke stud earrings allow you to create something that's completely personal.

The geometric 0.70ct gold and diamond stud earrings shown above are a bespoke commission I designed for a client, demonstrating just how creative and individual custom jewellery can be.

Pearl Stud Earrings

Pearl stud earrings have an elegance that never dates. I often recommend them to clients looking for a sophisticated piece they'll wear for years to come.

They're especially popular for:

  • Weddings
  • Professional wear
  • Evening occasions
  • Gifts

Freshwater pearls offer exceptional value, while Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian pearls are considered the luxury choices for those seeking larger or more distinctive pearls.

Choosing the Right Metal

  • White Gold – Offers a bright, contemporary look similar to platinum at a more accessible price. Most white gold jewellery is rhodium plated for added brilliance
  • Yellow Gold – A timeless classic that beautifully complements warm skin tones. Available in 9ct, 14ct and 18ct gold
  • Rose Gold – Known for its romantic pink hue, rose gold flatters many skin tones and pairs beautifully with both diamonds and coloured gemstones
  • Platinum – Naturally white, exceptionally durable and hypoallergenic. Although it commands a higher price than gold, it's prized for its strength and longevity

Understanding Diamond Stud Earrings

When I'm helping clients choose diamond stud earrings, I always explain the importance of the Four Cs. Understanding these four characteristics will help you choose the perfect pair for your style and budget.

  • Cut – Has the greatest impact on a diamond's sparkle. I always recommend Excellent or Ideal cut diamonds whenever possible, as they deliver the most brilliance
  • Colour – For white diamonds, I generally recommend colour grades between D and H, as they offer an excellent balance of bright white colour, sparkle and value
  • ClarityVS and SI clarity grades often represent fantastic value, with inclusions typically invisible to the naked eye
  • Carat Weight – Refers to the combined weight of both diamonds. Popular sizes include 0.25ct, 0.50ct, 1.00ct and 2.00ct total weight, with 1.00ct often providing the ideal balance of size, sparkle and everyday wearability

Choosing the Right Size

Choosing the right size of stud earrings comes down to your personal style and how you plan to wear them. It's also worth remembering that we all have different size and shape earlobes, so a diamond that looks perfect on one person may appear quite different on another. If you're unsure which size is right for you, I'm always happy to guide you.

  • Small Studs (0.25–0.50ct TW) – Perfect for everyday wear, younger wearers and professional settings where a subtle look is preferred
  • Medium Studs (0.75–1.00ct TW) – Offer noticeable sparkle while maintaining a classic, elegant appearance. This is one of the sizes I recommend most often, as it strikes a beautiful balance between impact and wearability
  • Large Studs (1.50–2.00ct TW+) – Designed to make a statement and are perfect for special occasions or for those who love a bolder look

Jewellery Care

"But I am afraid I will lose them!"

One of the most common concerns I hear is, "I'd love a pair of diamond stud earrings, but I'm afraid I'll lose them."

In reality, this is rarely an issue when you invest in well-made stud earrings from a reputable jeweller. My stud earrings are crafted in 18ct white, yellow or rose gold and feature a secure double-click fastening, designed to keep them safely in place throughout everyday life.

Both my eight-year-old daughter and I wear our stud earrings every single day, and we've always found them to be incredibly comfortable and secure.

To keep your stud earrings looking beautiful and wearing safely, I recommend:

  • Choosing a secure double-click or screw-back fastening
  • Having the fastenings checked annually by your jeweller
  • Removing valuable earrings before swimming or taking part in water sports
  • Insuring high-value jewellery against accidental loss
  • Cleaning your earrings regularly using warm water and a little mild soap
  • Storing each pair separately to prevent scratches

I also offer a full jewellery servicing service and would be delighted to help keep your treasured pieces in perfect condition for years to come. You can contact us to arrange this directly.

Natural Diamond vs Lab Grown Diamond Stud Earrings

Today's buyers have a choice between natural and lab grown diamonds. But which is best for you?

Natural Diamonds

Pros

  • Formed over billions of years deep within the earth's crust.
  • Rare and naturally unique.
  • Rich historical provenance.

Lab Grown Diamonds

Pros

  • Chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds.
  • Typically more affordable.
  • Allow buyers to purchase a larger stone within the same budget.

Both options are beautiful, durable and designed to last a lifetime. The right choice often comes down to your budget and the size of diamond you'd like to achieve. If you're still undecided, I'd be delighted to help you compare both options and find the perfect pair. Contact us for guidance.

Stud earrings are one of my favourite jewellery gifts to recommend because they're timeless, versatile and suited to almost every style. In fact, many of my male clients choose to surprise their bride-to-be with a pair of diamond stud earrings on the morning of their wedding—a gift she'll treasure long after the big day.

They're also a wonderful choice for:

  • Birthdays
  • Christmas
  • Anniversaries
  • Graduations
  • Weddings
  • Mother's Day
  • Valentine's Day
  • Push presents
  • A first pair of diamond earrings

Classic diamond and pearl stud earrings are particularly special because they're designed to be worn and enjoyed for decades.

Final Thoughts

Stud earrings have remained one of the most enduring jewellery staples for good reason. They're elegant, versatile and effortlessly timeless, whether you choose classic diamond studs, colourful gemstones, pearls or a bespoke design that's uniquely yours.

My advice is to choose a pair that reflects your personal style while considering the metal, diamond or gemstone, setting and fastening that best suits your lifestyle. With the right care, a beautifully crafted pair of stud earrings will become a treasured piece you'll enjoy wearing for many years—and perhaps even pass on to the next generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are stud earrings suitable for everyday wear?

Absolutely. They're designed to be comfortable enough for daily wear while remaining effortlessly elegant.

Which metal is best for sensitive ears?

Platinum and high-quality gold, particularly 14ct and 18ct, are excellent choices for sensitive ears. Their hypoallergenic properties help minimise irritation for most people.

What size diamond stud earrings should I buy?

For everyday wear, I usually recommend between 0.50ct and 1.00ct total weight, although the perfect size depends on your style, budget and the size of your earlobes. If you're unsure, I'd be happy to help you choose.

Do lab grown diamond stud earrings look different?

No. Lab grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. Without specialist equipment, they look exactly the same.

How often should I clean my stud earrings?

If you wear your earrings every day, I recommend cleaning them every few weeks. Regular cleaning removes oils and dirt, helping your diamonds maintain their sparkle.
