Disrupting an Icon: How We Reimagined The Claddagh Ring

Modern Claddagh Ring Collection

There are pieces of jewellery you wear for a season, and pieces you wear for a lifetime. The Claddagh was always meant to be the latter.

The Claddagh Symbol

The Claddagh Symbol

For over 300 years, its three symbols; the hands for friendship, the heart for love, and the crown for loyalty, have carried Irish connection across generations. The Claddagh ring should not feel flimsy or mass produced, like the meaning is being asked to do all the heavy lifting.

So we went back to the beginning. A question. A pencil line. A sketch. What would the Claddagh ring look like if it was re-designed by the modern woman?

Reinventing the Icon

Claddagh ring Sketches

Original Sketches

The Claddagh ring is not a trend-led piece. It has identity. It is memory. It is belonging.

We wanted all of this, but in a ring that celebrates the modern woman, her evolution and the representation of what she has become. We took the three existing elements that Claddagh represents (friendship, love and loyalty) and added two more diamonds in the crown to symbolise her strength and independence.

Final Sketches before Rendering

We worked closely with a professional jewellery designer and a CAD designer to bring our vision to life. We explored how the hands should curve, the shape of the diamonds in the crown, and how the heart should sit. We wanted to offer different diamond heart options, plus a green gemstone option to represent home. We wanted it all.

Claddagh ring CAD design process

Perfecting the CAD

We decided to create them in 14ct yellow, white and rose gold, reflecting a youthful, soft glow for the metals, suitable for all generations, but with the option of choosing 18ct gold if preferred.

We wanted Claddagh to have a presence when worn, but feel light and comfortable to wear. We chose chunky bands and split shoulder details to bring a fresh aesthetic that reflects where jewellery has evolved to. We paid close attention to the ring’s profile and proportions so it sits beautifully on the finger.

Three Icons

The Modern Claddagh Collection by The Diamond Expert

We started with a sketch and ended up with three modern icons that represent different strengths of today’s woman: Éireann, Gráinne, and Róisín. Each one with unique design and gemstone details to signify different aspects of Irish heritage and modern women.

Éireann (Air-uhn) meaning Ireland itself, a name that carries deep national symbolism and quiet strength. This design honours heritage, identity, and the enduring spirit of Ireland.

Gráinne (GRAWN-ya) after the legendary Irish heroine who defied expectations and chose her own path. She is energetic, confident, and unapologetic. Meaning love.

Rose gold claddagh ring with certificated diamonds

Róisín (roh-SHEEN) meaning “little rose”. A soft name, but a strong presence. Róisín feels modern and feminine. She is a romantic, strong Irish symbol.

Why Tsavorites?

Éireann features a heart shaped green tsavorite. Tsavorites are a lively, vibrant green gemstone that are rarer and more durable than green emeralds. They bring a fresh energy to a traditional Irish icon, and they look magnificent set in yellow gold.

Certificated Diamonds

Diamonds are not just sparkle. They are clarity, durability, and confidence. We use hand-selected certificated diamonds to ensure each stone comes with that quality and assessment that you can trust, and with consistency across the finished piece.

Claddagh For The Next 300 Years

We did not redesign the Claddagh to change its meaning. We redesigned it to honour it.

This collection is for the independent modern woman who wants her Irish story to feel considered and made to last. Especially around St Patrick’s Day, when connection is top of our minds, it is your reminder of home.

Your Perfect Match

modern claddagh rings with white gold or rose gold

Some clients love the crisp modern look of white gold or rose gold. Others prefer the traditional warmth of yellow gold. The right choice is the one that feels like your signature.

And if you are not sure, we will guide you, not just on colour, but on how the ring will fit with your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and the way you wear your jewellery day to day.
