Planning a Christmas Proposal? Here’s When To Start Thinking About The Ring

There's something rather special about a Christmas proposal. The excitement, the celebrations, having everyone you love around you... and, of course, the ring!

If you're planning to pop the question this Christmas, my advice is simple: start thinking about the ring now.

And before you panic, I'm not suggesting you need to know your diamond shapes, carat weights or even your partner's ring size. That's where I come in.

Over the years, I've helped hundreds of clients choose and create engagement rings, and I can tell you that no two experiences are ever quite the same.

Some arrive with a very clear vision, complete with screenshots, Pinterest boards and detailed instructions (I love the preparation!). Others sit down with me and say, "Rhona, I haven't a clue where to start."

Both are absolutely fine.

My job is to make the experience enjoyable, personal and, most importantly, to help you choose a ring that your partner will genuinely love wearing.

What If You Don’t Know Which Engagement Ring to Choose?

First of all, you're not expected to be a diamond expert. That's my job.

Choosing an engagement ring for someone else is a big decision, particularly when you're determined to keep everything a surprise.

There are quite a few things to consider:

  • Which diamond shape would they choose? A classic round brilliant, an elegant oval, a striking emerald cut or perhaps something a little more unusual?

  • What size diamond would suit their hand and your budget? Bigger isn't always better. Proportion, cut and the overall design make an enormous difference.

  • A natural or lab grown diamond? Both are real diamonds, but there are important differences in origin, rarity and price. I'll explain those so you can make an informed decision.

  • A simple solitaire or a setting with more detail? Sometimes the most beautiful designs are the simplest. Other times, a little unexpected detail makes the ring.

  • And how do you find out what they like without giving the game away? This is where a little detective work comes in!

The good news is that you don't need to have all the answers before we meet.

I always start by getting to know a little about the person who will actually be wearing the ring.

Think about their existing jewellery.

  • Do they wear yellow gold, white gold or platinum?

  • Is their style classic and understated, or do they love something a little more contemporary and distinctive?

  • What does their day-to-day life look like? An engagement ring should be beautiful, but it also needs to be practical for the person wearing it.

  • Have they ever admired a particular ring or casually sent you a photograph? Trust me, those little hints are rarely accidental!

And please, bring the screenshots. The more the merrier.

From there, I can help you narrow down the options and introduce you to diamonds and designs you may never have considered.

I also believe that buying an engagement ring should be an education, but an enjoyable one. I'll explain the important things to look for in a diamond, particularly cut, proportions and overall beauty, without overwhelming you with technical jargon.

You should leave feeling excited about your choice, not as though you've just sat a diamond exam.

Why Start Planning Your Christmas Engagement Ring Now?

At The Diamond Expert, every engagement ring is made to order in our dedicated workshop.

We're not simply taking a ring out of a display cabinet and putting it into a box. We're creating something specifically for the person who will wear it, and that deserves a little thought and attention.

Our usual turnaround time is approximately two weeks once everything has been agreed, but Christmas is an exceptionally busy period for us, with engagement rings, bespoke commissions and special gifts all being created in the lead-up to the festivities.

I always recommend allowing a little extra time.

Before we even begin making your ring, there are some lovely decisions to be made.

We'll source and select your diamond, consider different settings, look at proportions and refine the design until everything feels right.

You may fall in love with the first diamond I show you. Or you may want to compare several stones before deciding. Both approaches are perfectly normal.

If you're planning a surprise proposal, we may also need to do some discreet investigating to establish a ring size or find out a little more about your partner's preferences.

And believe me, I've heard some very creative stories about how clients have managed this!

The real luxury of starting early is having the time to enjoy the process.

The last thing I want is for you to feel rushed into choosing something as important as an engagement ring because Christmas Day is fast approaching.

How Does The Bespoke Engagement Ring Process Work?

I think there's a misconception that having an engagement ring made bespoke is complicated, expensive or only for people who know exactly what they want.

It really isn't.

In fact, it's one of the most enjoyable parts of what I do.

We begin with a conversation about your partner, their style, your ideas and what you're comfortable spending.

I don't expect you to arrive with a fixed budget if you haven't yet explored what different diamonds and designs cost. I much prefer to show clients what's possible at different price points so they can make a decision based on what they actually love.

From there, we'll explore the diamonds.

I'll explain the differences between natural and lab grown diamonds, show you how cut and proportions influence sparkle, and help you understand where it's worth investing your money.

A diamond's grading report is important, but so is seeing the stone in person. Two diamonds with similar specifications on paper can look quite different.

This is where experience really matters.

Then we move on to the design.

Perhaps you've always imagined a classic oval solitaire in yellow gold.

Perhaps your partner loves a vintage-inspired setting, an east-west diamond or a beautifully proportioned three-stone ring.

Or perhaps all you know is that they wear gold and love diamonds!

That's more than enough for us to get started.

We'll consider everything from the setting and band width to how a wedding ring will eventually sit alongside it. I always encourage clients to think about the wedding band at this stage, because the two rings should work beautifully together.

Once you're happy with the diamond and the final design, our workshop team brings your ring to life.

We'll keep you informed throughout the process, right through to collection or delivery.

The end result is a ring created specifically for your partner, with your input and our expertise behind every detail.

Can You Keep The Proposal a Surprise?

Absolutely!

And I have to say, I do love being in on a good secret.

We've helped organise plenty of surprise proposals over the years, so discretion is very much part of the service.

If your partner has no idea what's happening, simply let us know at the beginning.

We can agree on the safest way to contact you, discuss ring sizing and help you make decisions without attracting unwanted attention.

Some clients arrive with photographs of the exact ring their partner wants. Others have been given a few rather obvious hints.

And then there are the brave souls who are choosing completely on their own!

Whatever your situation, I'll guide you through it.

I want you to feel as confident about the ring as you do about the person you're proposing to.

After all, you've already made the most important decision. Let me help you with the diamond.

When Should You Get In Touch About a Christmas Proposal?

My advice? As soon as you've decided that Christmas is the moment.

You don't need to wait until you've chosen a diamond, worked out a ring size or settled on a design.

In fact, I'd much rather you came to me before making those decisions.

We'll discuss your ideas, explore your options and work backwards from your proposal date to make sure we have sufficient time to create your ring.

And if you're only beginning to think about it now, please don't assume you've left it too late.

Get in touch and we'll discuss what's possible. I can advise you on the available options and confirm a realistic timeframe.

Our usual turnaround is two weeks once the design is finalised, but Christmas availability will depend on our workshop schedule.

The important thing is to start the conversation.

There's no obligation to make every decision during your first appointment. Sometimes the best starting point is simply seeing a few beautiful diamonds and discovering what you love.

Would You Prefer to Choose The Engagement Ring Together?

Now, here's something I often remind clients.

You can still have a wonderful surprise proposal without choosing the final engagement ring yourself.

In fact, for some couples, designing the ring together afterwards is part of the excitement.

One option I particularly love is proposing with a promise ring.

We can create a beautiful ring for the proposal itself, which your partner can continue to wear on their other hand once you've chosen the engagement ring together.

It's a lovely way to have something special for that unforgettable moment without taking away the opportunity to choose the engagement ring as a couple.

And the promise ring becomes another meaningful piece of jewellery to enjoy for years to come.

Sometimes having the best of both worlds really is possible.

A Few Things to Remember

  • Start early. Give yourself time to explore diamonds, refine the design and have your ring made without the pressure of a Christmas deadline.

  • You don't need to know everything about diamonds. That's what I'm here for. I'll guide you through the options and explain what genuinely matters.

  • Be open-minded about your budget. Seeing different diamonds and designs will help you understand what's possible and where your money is best spent.

  • Tell us if it's a surprise. We're very experienced at keeping things discreet, and we'll help you navigate the practical details.

  • Remember, you can choose together. A promise ring is a beautiful option if you'd prefer your partner to be involved in designing their engagement ring.

Your questions, answered

How far in advance should I order an engagement ring for Christmas?

I recommend getting in touch as soon as you know you're planning a Christmas proposal. Our usual turnaround is approximately two weeks once the design is finalised, but you'll also need to allow time for diamond selection and design decisions. Christmas is one of our busiest periods, so early planning is always advisable. Contact us with your proposal date and we'll confirm what's possible.

How long does a bespoke engagement ring take?

Our usual turnaround time is two weeks once your diamond and design have been agreed. I recommend allowing additional time for your consultation, comparing diamonds and finalising the finer details. We'll confirm your individual timeline before proceeding.

Can you help if I don’t know what my partner likes?

Of course. In fact, that's how many of my consultations begin! Bring along any photographs or screenshots you have, tell me a little about your partner's style and the jewellery they already wear, and we'll take it from there. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want.

How do I start designing a bespoke engagement ring in Dublin?

Simply book a private consultation with me in Dublin, arrange a virtual appointment or send us your ideas via WhatsApp. We'll discuss your preferences, budget and timeline before exploring diamonds and creating a design that's personal to you.

Do you have a guide to choosing an engagement ring?

Yes. Our Guide to Buying an Engagement Ring covers everything from budgets and diamond quality to settings and bespoke design. It's a useful starting point, particularly if this is your first experience buying a diamond. And of course, I'm always happy to answer your questions personally.

Will my diamond come with a grading report?

Yes. We source natural centre diamonds with GIA grading reports and lab grown centre diamonds with IGI grading reports. I'll explain the information on your chosen diamond's report, including the 4Cs, and help you understand how those characteristics relate to the diamond's appearance and value.

Can I design my own engagement ring?

Absolutely, and it's one of our specialities. We can create a bespoke engagement ring around a natural diamond, lab grown diamond or coloured gemstone. From the stone and setting to the smallest design details, we'll work together to create something individual. Our rings are made in platinum or 18ct yellow, white or rose gold.

Can I adapt one of your existing engagement ring designs?

Of course. Many of our clients begin with a design they've seen in our collection and personalise it to suit their preferences. We can explore different diamond shapes, proportions, settings and metal choices. Alternatively, we can create something entirely new. The important thing is that the finished ring feels right for the person who'll be wearing it.
